Diogo Gago bets on Clio Trophy Spain with The Racing Factory

Diogo Gago is back to rallying and mono-brand competitions! After having started his career driving a Seat Marbella in 2010, and having achieved some triumphs abroad and after the most recent experiences driving R5 category cars, the young driver from Algarve joined efforts with The Racing Factory for his return in a sustained way to motorsport, betting in the Clio Trophy Spain, competition disputed at the wheel of a Renault Clio RS, counting again with Jorge Carvalho as co-driver. Built according to the new Rally 5 category regulations, the Renault Clio will offer Diogo Gago the opportunity to participate in a competitive competition, aboard a reliable car, with a very interesting level of equipment and controlled operational costs that may allow him to relaunch his career, in a sustained way. For Justino Reis, "this is another project that demonstrates The Racing Factory's will to bet on national talents, supporting them in the organization, planning and evolution of their careers, showing that we are ready and willing to work in all kinds of markets. We look at this competition as an excellent way to enter rallying, in a car with 'accessible' costs and that, in this specific case, may allow a new experience to Diogo Gago", he said before highlighting that "we are also pleased to have received the first Renault Clio RS Rally5 unit to arrive in Portugal, a car from a brand that has a golden history in national rallying and, also because of that, we hope that, besides Diogo's programme in Clio Trophy Spain, we can also be at the start of some other races in national territory, to show the potential of this Renault competition product.”

Aloísio Monteiro, The Racing Factory's CEO, is very satisfied with the arrival of Diogo Gago to the Santa Maria da Feira's team, highlighting the challenge to be faced: "If there were any doubts that The Racing Factory wants to be on the side of the young national talents, Diogo Gago's arrival to our team dispels all those doubts. Together with the driver, we've set this adventure in Spain, which will allow us to be part of the competition that reveals to be very suitable to those who want to start in the Iberian Peninsula. Controlled costs, a good number of entrants and final prizes for the winners of each rally may support the viability of future projects. We are very happy to support Diogo in this adventure, which is also another excellent challenge for our structure. Our main goal is to give conditions for Diogo Gago to compete again in a Rally2 category car, as soon as possible", he explained.

Diogo Gago doesn't hide his satisfaction in returning to the competition in such an ambitious project. "This will be my return to car competition, and soon, in an international competition, with a co-driver who has been with me for several years and with whom I made my debut in rallies, as is the case of Jet Carvalho. In the last two years I participated in only four races and the rhythm is naturally not the one I would like. I feel that I am a driver that can quickly gain competitive rhythm and, for this reason, we set out for this challenge with the objective of fighting for the front positions, otherwise it wouldn't make sense for me to participate in Rallies. We have to be aware that until then we'll have a hard work ahead, but, together with The Racing Factory, we'll do our best to start achieving good results", explained Diogo Gago, before demonstrating, in a humble way, that this 'step back' in his career is essentially due to the costs associated to car competition. "The pandemic affected a little bit the development of my career and this was the most viable way we found to resume the activity, with accessible costs. Perhaps you might consider this a step backwards, but in reality I see it as a natural step in order to be able to return as soon as possible to the main stages. We are all very confident that this is the right project to fight for victories."

Clio Trophy Spain starts on the 8th to the 10th April, in Spain, on Rallye Sierra Morena, having later on scheduled a visit to Portugal, in Castelo Branco. In a total of six events, the mono-brand competition will pass by the main rallies of the neighbour country, proof of the importance given to this competition by its organizers. Besides this program, The Racing Factory and the driver intend to try to be present in some other events of the National Rally Championship 2021.
